“VOICES” LAAPFF 2018 Special MEGAPOD Episode
Los Angeles, Calif. – It’s not uncommon for filmmakers from all over the world to converge in Los Angeles for one reason or another. Between May 3 – 12, 2018 Asian and Asian-American filmmakers will converge at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival (LAAPF) to showcase their films. The programs will vary from short to feature length films and animation to documentaries, displaying the talent of Asian and Pacific Islander creatives in the entertainment capital of the world.
FilAm Creative was fortunate enough to sit down with some of the filmmakers being featured at this prestigious film festival and create a MEAGAPODCAST to honor the Filipino-American films and filmmakers accepted into LAAPFF. The show features Ulam: Main Dish Alexandra Cuerdo (Director) and Rey Cuerdo (Producer and Father of Alexandra), Jeremy Sistoso (Director/Writer/Actor) ofFakeapino, and Cath Gulick (Director/Writer) of The Fever and the Fret to discuss about their film, inspirations, challenges producing their projects, and for Cath Gulick her exposure to Filipino-American culture.
Amazed by the talent in the Filipino community of New York city Cath Gulick talks about the options available to her during the casting process of her film. A refreshing opinion after years of ‘reasoning’ by studios/casting agencies claiming not enough Asian-American talent to chose from in response to the race bending controversyin films. The Fever and The Fret will play at Regal LA Live – Theatre 14 on May 9, 2018 at 7:00 PM, the film is also in the competition for Narrative Feature.
Ulam director Alexandra is a Video Producer for BuzzFeed and earned the distinct honor of producing the #1 most shared video on BuzzFeed’s beauty brand “Top Knot” for three months in 2017. Cuerdo talks the Filipino food movement in the United States and how strange that no other film/documentaries featured Filipnio Food until her film. Ulam is will play at the Aratani Theatre on May 6,2018 at 4:00 PM.
Fakeapino director and actor Jeremy Sistoso talks about the inspiration for his movie growing up bi-racial in the San Francisco Bay Area. Including his path to self discovery of accepting his Filipino identity and the evolution of diversity in Fremont, California. Fakeapino is one of eight short films being featured in LAAPFF shorts program “Dislocated Self And Beyond” on May 5, 2018 at 1:15 PM in Downtown Independent theater.
