Description

It’s Friday night, probably the most important night on the gay agenda, when Joel, 26, goes on a date with Rai, 20, that doesn’t end well. After a night out clubbing, Joel meets Ridzwan, 30, a closeted accountant who patronizes bathhouses. Their relationship slowly blossoms, but differing expectations about sex and coming out create complications. After the bad date with Joel, Rai continues searching for Mr. Right and meets Isaac from the Grindr app. Isaac is a 45-year-old senior private banker who led a double life when he was married to a woman, but is now enjoying his newly found freedom. When Rai finds out that Isaac hosts “chem-sex” parties, he loses faith in finding love in a world where sex is on everyone’s mind.

We stopped, looked, blinked, and couldn’t believe what we saw: a whole new generation of aspiring APA feature filmmakers who have found a creative outlet through episodic storytelling. Is this a short-cut for feature filmmaking? Or have our artists found a new, unexploited means of telling complete stories? This showcase will include a post-screening conversation with many of the creators behind these inventive new works. — Abraham Ferrer
