Flip The Record
Directed by Marie Jamora
Description
A little-known but lasting explosion of hip-hop culture grew out of the Filipino-American community of 1980s San Francisco. This film takes us into the beat of an aspiring mobile DJ crew in ’84. Vanessa, sick of the the constraints and boring piano lessons in her conservative Filipino-American household, starts teaching herself on the sly how to scratch on her older brother’s turntables. We follow Ness as she discovers her talents and place in the local music scene of the era.

We’ll be just fine, pretending we’re not, we’re far from lonely, and it’s all that we’ve got. Whether in the city, or the suburbs, these stories behind and front of the camera showcases families in their elements; antagonizing, struggling, overcoming, supporting, and loving. — Kirby PeñafielIn This Program: 626, Los Angeles, 1999, Float, Little Lights, Flip The Record, Fragile (a portrait of Gil Batle), Lost Dogs
